Twelve

I slept like a log until Parker softly shook my shoulder. The smell of coffee first hit my nose as I rolled over, and I peeked my eye open to find Max handing me a to-go cup. Parker helped me sit up as I took the cup from him, inhaling the caramel-laced goodness before taking a sip.

A sip that turned into a pull.

Which turned into a chug.

Until the hot liquid burned the back of my throat as I sucked the last of it down.

“Good thing we have more,” Spencer said with a chuckle.

I cleared my throat and shook my head. “What time is it?”

Max didn’t skip a beat. “Nine in the morning. The witches are meeting us for breakfast in an hour.”

I stood to my feet. “Give me thirty minutes to clean up and we can head out.”

I took a quick shower, allowing the hot water to beat against my back. I slipped out and dried myself off before changing into clothes one of the guys had laid out for me near the sink. Steam filled the air as I walked out of the bathroom, cracking my knuckles and stretching my arms above my head.

And after the four guys took turns taking the quickest showers of their lives, probably, we all headed for the heart of the French Quarter.

“I still think we should at least move hotel rooms,” Max murmured.

Parker chuckled. “There isn’t anything in that hotel room that we can’t leave behind. I’ve got the map of New Orleans in my back pocket, and Spencer’s got Rosalie’s things.”

I blinked. “Wait, what?”

Spencer chuckled as his hand fell to the small of my back. “Let’s just say you need more coffee.”

I giggled. “And here I thought I was actually awake.”

And I could have sworn I heard Cooper behind me saying, “The least she could do is be more perceptive.”

His words hurt, and I wasn’t sure why they had been necessary. But when I peered over my shoulder I found him smiling at me, so I figured maybe I had heard him wrong. Still, it hurt, though. The idea that Cooper could see me as nothing more than a bobble-headed idiot.

I mean, it wasn’t my fault that I knew literally nothing about the world my murdered parents came from.

Those vampires will pay for what they did to them.

When we dipped into a coffee and beignet shop, my stomach started growling. I walked straight up to the cash register and ordered a dozen of those bad boys and another large caramel coffee before I stepped off to the side, assuming the guys would want to order as well. But when no one appeared to continue the order, I peered over my shoulder.

And found that two women had joined the group of men standing at the door.

“Is that it, miss?” the cashier asked.

Maybe I’m feeling things I shouldn’t. “Uh, yeah, yeah. I guess so.”

She rang me up. “That’ll be $15.82.”

I slowly turned away from the group and looked back at the woman waiting to take my money.
